Founded by Harry Butler and his family, they established a small dairy, orchard, and mixed farm in Picnic Bay. Eventually, they played a hand in setting up an intermittent ferry service from the mainland. From then Picnic was the islands main hub, passenger ferries used the jetty for their transfers, topless cars and mokes lined the foreshore, and the bay was always buzzing.
In 2003 the new marina at Nelly Bay was opened, and the liveliness of the bay began to quieten down. Now you can enjoy the absolute serenity of Picnic Bay and the foreshore.
Spot the wreck of George Rennie on a low tide from the beach, enjoy beautiful grass areas and have a fish from our famous jetty. Picnic Bay still has restaurants, a kids playground, BBQs and amenities, the beach is also patrolled by Surf Life Saving Queensland with stinger nets in place during the summer months.
Up the road from the beach is the islands own Country Club, hit a round of golf or admire the lush greens as you journey from Picnic to West Point.
